Scabies Symtoms

Scabies symptoms are easy to detect if you know what you are looking for. They can appear in several parts of your body and they all look almost the same. Scabies is a skin disorder caused by bugs. There are three main scabies symptoms to look out for. The first thing you will notice is a red rash on your skin.

If you have a skin rash made of small, red bumps, and blisters, this is one of the main scabies symptoms. It affects only specific areas of the skin mainly between the fingers (on the webs), back of the elbow, wrists and knees. Scabies symptoms can also appear around the nipple area, the umbilicus, around the waist, the back and sides of your feet, genital area, and the buttocks. Each bump on the rash contains some blood crust but not all bumps will contain a bug. Usually, there are only ten to fifteen live mites if you have hundreds of bumps.

Scabies symptoms also include itching. Actually, this is the first scabies symptom that would appear although at this stage, most people won’t give it much of a thought until they see the red rash mentioned earlier. This will become most noticeable during the night or after bathing. Some people would mistake this for dry skin. The itching is caused by an allergic reaction of the skin to the mite or bug. Severity of this can range from one case to another but there hasn’t been a documented case where the itching is so severe that it causes loss of sleep.

If left untreated, other scabies symptoms can occur which indicates that the problem is getting worse. One example is scratching which can sometimes be covered in crust. The textbook description of this condition will always mention the burrows or tunnels under the skin. These are very tiny projections that can measure from 2 to 15mm long. They will appear as grey, brown or red lines and are very difficult to spot. Sometimes, linear scratches can be mistaken for these burrows.

Another example of more severe scabies symptoms is nodular scabies. This would look like small reddish brown raised areas and may develop on the groin, penis, buttocks, scrotum, or armpits of the affected person. Each nodule would itch and could persist on for weeks, sometimes months, even after the scabies have been cured.

It is also important to note that the symptoms of this disease can be mistaken for other skin conditions. Proper treatment can be done only after accurately defining the disease.

It is best that when you feel or notice probable scabies symptoms that you have it checked immediately. Although not really dangerous, there is a huge chance that you can spread this skin condition to other people as well. And, if you do not act immediately, your condition can worsen as mentioned above and this can be very irritating and distracting. That is why it is important that you have yourself checked as soon as you notice scabies symptoms on your skin.
